  • Battle of Quebec

    The Continental Army suffers a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Quebec as commanding General Richard Montgomery is killed in action and many American soldiers are wounded or captured. The battle was the first significant defeat for the Continentals and, after a failed siege of the city, forced the American army to retreat.

  • Battle of Stones River begins

    The bloody Battle of Stones River begins in middle Tennessee outside the town of Murfreesboro. The battle, fought between December 31 and January 2, saw extremely high casualty rates as the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by General Braxton Bragg, failed to break the Union lines.
