  • Michigan enters the Union

    Michigan enters the Union as the 26th state. Following the resolution of the Toledo War, contested between Ohio and the Michigan Territory in 1836, Michigan ceded Toledo, gained a portion of the Upper Peninsula, and joined the Union the following year.

  • Douglas MacArthur born

    General Douglas MacArthur is born in the U.S. Arsenal Building in Little Rock, Arkansas. MacArthur, the son of Civil War veteran and Lieutenant General Arthur MacArthur, Jr., commanded Allied forces in the South Pacific during World War II, led the occupation of Japan, and directed the United Nations-led coalition against North Korea in 1950.

  • American soldiers moved to Europe

    The first American soldiers arrive in Europe as units of the 34th Infantry Division land in Northern Ireland. Following Nazi Germany and Italy declaring war on December 11, American and British officials decided to concentrate on defeating the Axis powers in Europe.
