  • Truman Doctrine announced

    In a speech before the American public, President Harry Truman announces the "Truman Doctrine:" the American economic and military support for the Greek and Turkish forces fighting communism. After Great Britain withdrew its support, the Truman administration pledged to support free states fighting totalitarianism and political injustices.

  • First Fireside Chat

    President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivers his first "Fireside Chat" to the American people. During his presidency Roosevelt hosted 30 radio broadcasts covering the banking crisis, the formulation of the New Deal, and American involvement in World War II, setting a precedent for presidents speaking to the American people.
