  • Confederate Congress approves slaves in military

    The Confederate Congress passes a law authorizing the use of slaves as uniformed soldiers for the Confederate Army. This policy, which had been endorsed by General Robert E. Lee and several other Confederate commanders, only allowed emancipation if the owner permitted it.

  • JFK announces Alliance for Progress

    President John F. Kennedy announces the Alliance for Progress, a program designed to help boost economic and political reform in Latin America. The program aimed to combat illiteracy, authoritarianism, and economic stagnation in the Americas by providing economic and military aid to friendly governments.
