  • Three Mile Island accident

    The Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania begins to overheat and approach a nuclear meltdown before the nuclear damage is contained. The incident, the worst nuclear accident in American history, did not cause any fatalities or health effects, but the plant did emit small levels of radioactive gases into the atmosphere.

  • Battle of Glorieta Pass

    In the New Mexico Territory, Union and Confederate soldiers clash at the Battle of Glorieta Pass. Although the Confederate army forced the Federal troops to retreat through Glorieta Pass, they could not hold New Mexico and Arizona or secure valuable mines in the Rocky Mountains.
