  • Marshall Plan authorized

    President Harry Truman signs the Economic Cooperation Act of 1948, better known as the Marshall Plan, into law. The Marshall Plan was designed to rebuild the European economies after World War II by fixing infrastructure, removing trade barriers, and injecting capital into struggling economies.

  • Pony Express completed

    The Pony Express begins service between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California. The service helped link the East and West Coasts and expedited mail delivery to California. The Pony Express would end in October 1861 as the Civil War divided the country, while new telegraph lines extended across the California.
