  • Battle of Shiloh begins

    The Confederate Army of Mississippi, led by General Albert Sidney Johnston, launches a surprise attack against General Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Tennessee, initiating the Battle of Shiloh. Fought in southern Tennessee, Johnston's Confederates overrun several Federal positions before Grant adjusted his defenses. During the assault, Johnston, leading his men on horseback, was mortally wounded, which passed command to General P.G.T. Beaureguard.

  • 1st Olympics

    The Games of the I Olympiad begin in Athens, Greece. Only 14 nations competed in the first modern games, with the United States capturing the most gold medals and finishing second in the overall medal count.
