    With the reinforcements provided by General Don Carlos Buell, Union General Ulysses S. Grant launches a series of successful counterattacks against Confederate lines at the Battle of Shiloh, winning a decisive Federal victory. After withstanding a Confederate onslaught the previous day, Grant's superior force drove the Confederates out of southern Tennessee.
