    15th President James Buchanan is born in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania. First elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Federalist, Buchanan later served as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. From the Senate Buchanan was appointed Secretary of State for President James Polk, serving from 1845 to 1849.

  • Sirhan Sirhan sentenced to death

    Palestinian-born Sirhan Sirhan is sentenced to death in a California gas chamber for the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy. Sirhan shot Kennedy on June 5, 1968 as he walked through the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.
