  • Bear Flag Revolt

    California settlers in Sonoma declare independence from Mexico and proclaim the California Republic, popularly known as the "Bear Flag Republic." Responding to a Mexican quest to remove all non-Mexican citizens from California, William B. Ide drafts a proclamation from Sonoma declaring California as an independent country.
