  • First female cadets enrolled at West Point

    The United States Military Academy at West Point, the oldest and most prestigious army school in the country, enrolls female cadets for the first time in history. Sixty-two of these cadets will go on to graduate and be commissioned as second lieutenants.

  • Hoover Dam construction begins

    After years of planning, construction begins on the Hoover Dam at Black Canyon along the Colorado River. Over the next three years the arch gravity structure would rise 726 feet to become the largest dam in the world. Nearly 100 men would die building it.
