  • Lincoln leaves Springfield

    President-elect Abraham Lincoln boards the train in Springfield, Illinois en route to Washington D.C. Lincoln planned to greet supporters during his voyage, but it was interrupted as Allan Pinkerton discovered a plot to assassinate Lincoln while his train stopped in Baltimore.

  • First American hospital founded

    Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond found Philadelphia Hospital, the first hospital in the American colonies. Located in Center City Philadelphia, the hospital has treated wounded soldiers from the American Revolution, Civil War, and Spanish-American War.

  • Thomas Edison born

    Prolific American inventor and entrepreneur Thomas Alva Edison is born in Milan, Ohio. Holding over 1,000 U.S. patents, Edison is best known for inventing the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the light bulb, which brought light to millions of American houses.
