  • Andrew Jackson born

    Seventh President Andrew Jackson is born in the Waxhaws community along the North-South Carolina border. Jackson became a national hero as the commanding general at the Battle of New Orleans, a complete American victory during the War of 1812. Elected to the presidency in 1828, Jackson brought about a new era of American democracy, with expanded suffrage and a greater emphasis on the common man.

  • Maine enters the Union

    Maine enters the Union as the 23rd state. Admitted as part of the Missouri Compromise, Maine kept the balance between free and slave states. Prior to its admission, residents voted to separate from Massachusetts because of continuing disputes between citizens.

  • Battle of Guilford Court House

    British and Continental forces clash at the Battle of Guilford Court House in present-day Greensboro, North Carolina. While technically a British victory, the British lost approximately 25% of their command, and the battle forced General Charles Cornwallis north into Virginia, where he would encounter a combined American and French force.
