  • President Kennedy assassinated

    President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while his motorcade passes through Dealey Plaza. Lee Harvey Oswald, the presumed assassin, was shot and killed by Dallas restaurant owner Jack Ruby two days later.

  • Blackbeard killed in battle

    English pirate Edward Teach, better known by the nickname Blackbeard, is killed by a British Royal Navy raiding party commanded by Lieutenant Robert Maynard. The battle took place off the Atlantic coast of Ocracoke Island, east of present-day North Carolina.

  • Cairo Conference

    President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek meet in Cairo to discuss military tactics against Japan and the future of postwar East Asia. The conference, hosted at the American embassy in Cairo, concluded that Japan would be stripped of its conquered territory, China would regain sovereignty over several Pacific islands, and Korea would gain independence following the war.
