Sven Beckert is Laird Bell Professor of History at Harvard University, where he teaches the history of the United States in the nineteenth century. He is the author of several books focusing on this history as well as the history of capitalism in general, including Empire of Cotton: A Global History, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and Capitalism: A Global History. Beckert is co-chair of the Program on the Study of Capitalism at Harvard University and co-chair of the Weatherhead Initiative on Global History (WIGH). He is also a Guggenheim Fellow.
