Some of the most treacherous waters for ships in the 19th and 20th centuries were located off the coast of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, home to over 5,000 sinkings since recordkeeping began in 1526. Life-saving stations like the one in Oregon Inlet became crucial rescue points for shipwrecked sailors.
