Busy Dorchester Bay to the southeast of Boston was notoriously dangerous. In 1896 following many fatal accidents, Congress established a seasonal floating station.
U.S. Life-Saving Service operated the ship-like structure until World War II, when the floating station house was taken out of active service and replaced by the shoreside Boston Coast Guard Station.
