The Lyle Gun

Lifesavers during a drill at Brant Rock Life-Saving Station.

Lifesavers had three main ways of propelling a line: the Cunningham rocket, the Hunt gun, and the Lyle gun. The Hunt gun was used at Humane Society stations throughout Massachusetts, while the Lyle gun was officially adopted by the USLSS and subsequently by the Coast Guard, where it remained in use until the 1960s.
