The Wayside, built in the early 1700s, stood along the route taken by British troops during the Battles of Lexington and Concord. At the time, it was home to Samuel Whitney, a member of the Provincial Congress and the muster master for the Concord Minutemen. It was later home to literary figures like Nathaniel Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott.
